SPAWN - REVIEW

Image
1997 was not a great year for superhero movies: not only did we get Batman & Robin but we also got Spawn and, although the latter was much more interesting and original than the former, it received some pretty rough feedback from critics and audiences alike. Based on the dark supernatural comic-books, Spawn sees special forces soldier Al Simmons (Michael Jai White) get double-crossed by Jason Wynn (Martin Sheen), the head of the agency who sent him on his latest mission. Simmons is burned alive and left for dead leaving him not only horribly disfigured but undead as a short trip down to Hell dooms him to eventually lead the Devil's army. In retrospect, attempting to tell this story on a $40M budget was somewhat over-ambitious seeing as the film was not only packed with special effects but builds up to a climax set in Hell with Spawn fighting a demon. Michael Jai White does a solid job as Spawn and it's pretty refreshing to see a film with an African-American superh

MICROBE ET GASOIL - REVIEW

Image
Taking another break from Hollywood filmmaking, director Michel Gondry follows Mood Indigo with Microbe Et Gasoil (Microbe & Gasoline), a coming-of-age story about two young boys building a makeshift car of sorts and travelling around France. Newcomers Ange Dargent and Théophile Baquet play the titular leads and the playful friendship their characters form is both real and touching. You're never quite sure where the film is going and, while it could have easily developed into a love story, it instead reveals itself to simply be a film about rebellion and growing-up. Gondry takes a step back this time and doesn't add in his own brand of surreal storytelling and practical effects. The only unusual part of the film being the house/car the teenagers drive throughout. Microbe Et Gasoil taps into a specific feeling most of us can probably relate to, that is the reluctance to be different, to grow-up and the dream of one day just setting off on an adventure with no plans of

TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE - REVIEW

Image
Back in 2004, South Park maestro Trey Parker directed Team America: World Police , a puppet feature satirising the US's handling of the world post-9/11. The cool thing about this being a Trey Parker and Matt Stone movie is that it takes the piss of everyone from America to Kim Jong-Il, terrorists, Hollywood, the UN and even Michael Moore. The whole time mocking the stiff style of old puppet-based shows like Thunderbirds or Captain Scarlet . The film sees Team America, a covert team of destructive, clueless heroes, intervene in various global clashes before hiring an actor called Gary to help out in missions where they need to infiltrate an enemy territory. Of course, this only leads to more mindless blunders. Parker and Stone voice the majority of the film's characters and clearly have a ball spoofing the likes of George Clooney, Matt Damon and other Hollywood stars. Believe it or not, Team America is also a musical as we first meet Gary singing in a Broadway show abo

LA CHEVRE - REVIEW

Image
Slapstick maestro Pierre Richard teams up with Gerard Depardieu in La Chevre (aka The Goat), a French comedy about a man plagued by relentless bad luck who is hired to find a missing person who is just as unlucky as he is. Campana (Depardieu) is the professional detective who is unfortunate enough to be tasked with assisting Francois Perrin (Richard) with his mission, the latter not realising that the only reason he's leading the investigation is because the father of the lost young woman is hoping his inherent bad luck will lead him to his daughter somehow. The adventure takes the unlikely duo to Mexico and, along the way, they encounter gangsters, prostitutes, dirty cops, gorillas, bees and countless other problems. Eventually, the initially sceptical Campana starts to realise that Perrin might just be as jinxed as his boss claimed he was. Pierre Richard and Gerard Depardieu teamed up in two other Francis Veber films, Les Comperes and Les Fugitifs , which were both remad
