MY TOP 10 DAVID BOWIE FILM PERFORMANCES

Image
As we mourn the loss of music icon and all around legend David Bowie, I thought I'd take a look back at the multi-talented artist's film career and pick out a Top 10 of my personal favourite performances of his. 10 THE PRESTIGE While David Bowie is almost unrecognisable in Christopher Nolan's The Prestige , he makes his role as genial inventor Nikola Tesla count. His entrance, casually walking through electrical currents, alone is worth seeing. Darn good (if nutty) movie too. 9 THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST If there was one person I did not expect to pop up in Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation Of Christ it certainly was David Bowie. He plays the role of Pontius Pilate and he plays it purposely with no extravagance whatsoever, which is bold and refreshing since usually actors tend to go all out as Pilate. An unexpected, if welcome, cameo. 8 TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME As if Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me wasn't enoug

FAMILY GUY: IT'S A TRAP! - REVIEW

Image
It's A Trap! , the epic conclusion to Family Guy 's Star Wars spoof "Laugh It Up, Fuzzball" trilogy, takes on Return Of The Jedi and, if the opening text crawl is anything to go by, reluctantly so. Seth MacFarlane basically stating early on that Fox insisted this third part was made and asking us to lower our expectations. Luckily, Return Of The Jedi is arguably the easiest movie in the original trilogy to make fun of so the Family Guy team don't seem to struggle at all. American Dad!  characters are called upon to fill certain roles which may seem like a desperate move but, as someone who likes that other show, I appreciated seeing the likes of Roger and Klaus (geniusely cast as Admiral Ackbar) take part in that animated inter-galactic battle. As ever, expect some cool cameo voice work as the likes of Carrie Fisher, Patrick Stewart, Anne Hathaway and... Rush Limbaugh (as the Rancor) all pop up at various moments. In terms of characters, main new additions i

FAMILY GUY: SOMETHING, SOMETHING, SOMETHING DARK SIDE - REVIEW

Image
After the success of Blue Harvest , the Family Guy gang soon went to work on a second installment and the result was Something, Something, Something Dark Side , a spoof of the second Star Wars movie The Empire Strikes Back . Once again, the power goes out and the Griffins are denied television so Peter (Seth MacFarlane) starts telling the story of Episode V, although he starts off describing the movie Black Snake Moan . Early jokes include Sesame Street 's Cookie Monster as a wampa, an impromptu George Takei cameo, a tauntaun with the head of Don Knotts, a Rodney Dangerfield reference and a Juicy Fruit commercial in the middle of the action. The movie and TV references keep coming fast with everything from Iron Man to Flash Gordon , Back To The Future Part II and Rocky IV getting their dues. Expect cameo appearances by Tom Selleck, James Caan and James Woods. Characters-wise, the main additions here are Yoda (voiced by Jon Benjamin) and Lando Calrissian (Mort, bizarrely

ROBOT CHICKEN: STAR WARS TRILOGY - REVIEW

Image
Back in 2007, slightly before Family Guy tackled Star Wars with their own spoof Blue Harvest , the Robot Chicken team delivered a 22 minute-long episode full of nerdy lols then went on to produce two more. Robot Chicken maestro Seth Green of course handled a good bunch of the voice work but the episodes also included cameos from the likes of George Lucas, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams and Anthony Daniels plus a handful of non-Star Wars-related celebrities. Seth MacFarlane also took on a few voices, the most memorable one being the Emperor. The skits are presented in typical Robot Chicken form, separated by short bursts of white noise, and the jokes come fast. As is the case with most parodies, the whole thing is a bit hit-and-miss, but a lot of it does stick. In the first instalment, Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode I , some highlights include the Emperor receiving a collect call from Darth Vader telling him the Death Star has exploded, an Imperial officer e
