GOTHAM: SEASON 2 - REVIEW

Image
Gotham is a weird one. The first season of Fox's Batman prequel series was an uneven mess with the odd clever moment or likeable performance here and there. What should have been a simple detective show focusing on a young Jim Gordon trying to bring the person who killed Bruce Wayne's parents to justice turned out to be packed with over-the-top obscure and familiar villains all entangled in conflicting subplots. For my review of Season 1, you can check it out  HERE . Season 2 promised the "Rise Of The Villains" and we certainly got a few more key baddies including the likes of Hugo Strange, Mr Freeze, Clayface and Azrael. The first half of the season is focused on Theo Galavan (James Frain), a member of the Dumas family out for revenge against the Waynes who supposedly disgraced his ancestors: he hires the help of Jerome (this season's Joker), his niece Silver St. Cloud (Natalie Alyn Lind), his sister Tabitha (Jessica Lucas) and the newly unhinged Barbar

24: SEASON 2 - REVIEW

Image
Jack Bauer's back and it's a darn good thing he is because, this time, a nuclear bomb is about to hit L.A. and kill thousands. The stakes are much, much higher and, despite David Palmer being president, it's not looking good for CTU or the US in general. The season opens on a morose note as we find Kiefer Sutherland's Bauer depressed after the untimely death of his wife and retired from CTU. Also, his relationship with his (annoying) daughter Kim (Elisha Cuthbert) is damaged and she, once again, gets her own subplot where she runs around being all kinds of stupid and distracting hard-working people from what's actually important. Once again, she's the season's worst asset but luckily, her main "contribution" more or less ends about halfway through. After ruining several innocent people's lives, by the way. Poor old Billy Burke is dragged in as her own personal antagonist and isn't very convincing as a dude who just happens to be a cold

FRINGE SEASON 1 - REVIEW

Image
Following a hugely popular show like Lost was always going to be tough but who knew that J.J. Abrams had one more trick up his sleeve? From the very first scene of the Fringe pilot you know you're in good hands as a bunch of passengers on a plane (so far so Lost) start melting... Yeah. You guys just wait till you get to the zombie baby episode. What Abrams has skilfully and seemingly effortlessly managed to do is single-handedly reinvent the FBI cop series into a sort of sci-fi/50's B movie/CSI hybrid which on paper really shouldn't work but actually does just that, and beautifully so. It might take a bit of time for Fringe to grow on people but it's pretty clear for anyone having followed it from the very beginning that this is the natural successor to X-Files . Not that aliens are at all involved but in terms of sheer serious out-there-ness and cleverness of concept, Fringe is right up there and has a definite sense of fun to it not to mention lots of creati
