THUMB WARS: THE PHANTOM CUTICLE - REVIEW

Image
"If there were thumbs in space and they got mad at each other there would be..." Thumb Wars was Steve Oedekerk's first attempt at making a short film spoof entirely out of thumbs and it was just as crazy and brilliant as you would expect. The 29 minute-long parody not only introduced a unique and bizarre thumb-based technique to tell its story (actors faces superimposed over clothed thumbs with wigs) but it spawned several other such spoofs. Thumb Wars retells Episode IV: A New Hope with Oedekerk's very own brand of silliness peppered throughout. Every character is given a goofy (or goofier, I should say) name and gets the full thumb treatment, whatever that means. Obi-Wan Kenobi is now Oobedoob Scoobi-Doobi Benubi and he quickly tries to convince Luke (aka Loke Groundrunner) to touch tongues with him, meanwhile Leia literally has buns on her head, hence the name Princess Bunhead, Yoda (aka Master Puppet) freely admits to being a puppet and Darth "Blac

GHOST SHARK - REVIEW

Image
Now I know what you're thinking. Ghost sharks don't exist! Well, I'm here to tell you you're wrong. So wrong. Case and point: Ghost Shark . Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water, sharks started coming back from the dead! At least, that's what we're meant to get from this movie which translates the idea of a ghost shark by showing us neon blue glowing sharks (thank you Final Cut Pro's worst ever effect) and some confusingly magical cave. This is intercut with the usual shark movie schtick: annoying characters, mostly girls in bikinis, trying to deal with the problem, most of whom die in silly ways as the movie sharks along. Produced by the Syfy channel, this could have either been just plain stupid, like The Asylum's Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus for example, or self-knowingly ridiculous and funny-bad, closer to something like Sharktopus . Luckily, they went down the latter route. Ghost Shark is, I can confirm, thankfully

DRACULA: DEAD AND LOVING IT - REVIEW

Image
Mel Brooks takes on Bram Stoker's Dracula in this cartoonish 1995 spoof starring the late, great Leslie Nielsen as Dracula and the director himself as vampire hunter Van Helsing. It's very dumb, very silly but is it any good? Hard one to review this one since I do have a soft spot for it. On the one hand, technically the film looks a bit cheap and often feels more like a filmed play than it does a fully put-together movie. Part of the joke is that it does look so trashy, though, so it's hard to fault the film for that. As a straight-up piss-take of Francis Ford Coppola's film, it's pretty spot-on and, in fact, actually misses out on a few more easy jokes it could have made about certain parts of that movie. The idea of Leslie Nielsen as Dracula is hilarious in itself and Nielsen sure doesn't disappoint, clearly having a ball putting on the silliest Transylvanian accent he could come up with and joking around with Brooks, Peter MacNichol and the rest of t

BASEKETBALL - REVIEW

Image
Talk about a weird movie idea... BASEketball was Trey Parker and Matt Stone's acting follow-up to Orgazmo but this time, neither of them was on-board as director or writer so with David Zucker (of The Naked Gun fame) in charge, this was always going to have a different vibe altogether. Luckily, these two guys are likable enough to keep the movie afloat throughout. That said, had they not been the stars of the show, it's unlikely that BASEketball would have been as watchable as it is. For one, it's unclear whether the movie is a straight-up parody of sports movies in general or just a goofy, not-so-gross-out comedy with a spoofy vibe to it. The core concept is an interesting one with sports having become so bloated and inaccessible that the world has basically given up on them. So when two random dudes come up with a new (if ludicrous) one, the world embraces their fresh, genuine, playful take until that sport finds itself in danger of falling into the same money-d
