IRON MAN - REVIEW

Image
The film that started it all... kind of. Jon Favreau's Iron Man was really the moment where Marvel revealed to the world their mad intentions of putting together crossover mega-movie  The Avengers . As we all know, they pulled it off remarkably but it could have all gone pear-shaped super early. I mean, with the likes of Captain America and Thor it wasn't going to be a walk in the park to make each character and their far-fetched stories plausible, let alone cram everybody into one movie. But Iron Man showed early on that you can make a silly superhero flick without screwing it up, creating a movie that, even to this day, is simply a lot of fun. Robert Downey Jr is genius billionaire douchebag Tony Stark, who is made to face the reality of his misguided work directly and henceforth grow a conscience. The entire movie is one big build-up to the creation of that badass armored suit with some cool action scenes and a last-minute villain thrown in for good measure. Because

SHERLOCK HOLMES - REVIEW

Image
It's doubtful that many shared Guy Ritchie's pumped up vision of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's iconic sleuth, and after films like  Swept Away  as well as unflattering reshoots which delayed the film's release, Guy's Sherlock Holmes wasn't looking good. On many accounts, what was expected (and somewhat feared) is indeed present, with Sherlock and Watson busting bad guy butt like a James Bond and John McClane team-up and of course numerous silly, overblown moments.  That aside, one can't deny that this Sherlock Holmes is a lot of fun. No matter what its flaws are, this is good old fashioned Hollywood nonsense: it's stylish, very engaging, clever, silly and works both as a detective story and a buddy comedy. Law makes a fine Watson and Downey Jr is appropriately charming ( if a little short) and makes an entertaining Holmes. Rachel McAdams also offers fine support and gloriously manages to avoid being the usual annoying, thrown-in-as-a-love-interest-for-the-

SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS - REVIEW

Image
Before Guy Ritchie's original Sherlock Holmes came out I was as sceptical as can be. It looked absurd and I just couldn't understand how anyone could picture Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character in this way. Holmes and Watson physically kicking butt like a couple of badasses? I didn't get it. Then I saw the film and, against my own will, enjoyed it enormously. Sure it was ridiculous and very silly throughout... but in a good way! Clearly Ritchie and the gang were having a ball making their own balls-to-the-wall macho version of the iconic sluth and it showed. No doubt die hard fans of Sherlock around the world were facepalming their way through it but it's hard to deny how trashily entertaining it was. Besides, the Jude Law/Robert Downey Jr. team-up worked perfectly and the relationship between these guys saved the movie from being just a clusterfuck of kicks, punches, oofs! and arghs!. Now here comes the sequel: same director, same cast (with fresh additions)

KISS KISS BANG BANG - REVIEW

Image
Robert Downey Jr should be in every movie. Even as an extra or something: just there. His impressive comeback is no huge surprise in that he is one of the best actors working today but it is very welcome. A film like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, without him, would no doubt had been forgotten and left for dead...especially with THAT title! Thankfully though, there's life in this old dog yet. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang stars Downey Jr as a petty thief turned actor turned detective who gets entangled in a twisted Raymond Chandler-style story that's actually kind of hard to follow...but then again so was The Big Sleep . We're introduced to this world by a terrific self-conscious voiceover courtesy of Downey Jr himself and although the film's unique tongue-in-cheek style is a tad jarring at first you soon get into it and join the gang on their wacky adventure. The film itself is stylish, fun, clever, entertaining and very funny. Downey Jr and Val Kilmer make a good double act as they
