DJANGO UNCHAINED - REVIEW

Image
Remember when the harshest subject Quentin Tarantino ever tackled was ear-slicing? Well, that time is long gone and after scalping nazis in (pretend) WWII flick Inglourious Basterds , QT now takes on slavery! And you know what? The glourious basterd has done it again. Django Unchained takes the 70's spaghetti western, the blaxploitation genre, adds that fresh Basterds-style raw brutality, QT's trademark razor-sharp, dark-as-night sense of humour to make a thrilling and unique Southern (as opposed to a Western) full of everything you'd expect from a rough-edged QT effort. This time, however, it isn't a revenge mission we're undertaking or even the mindless extermination of bad guys but rather a rescue with some bounty hunting along the way. Which is not to say Django Unchained plays it safe or isn't violent, FAR from it, it just means that at its core, the film is something of a fairy tale with the love story driving the plot fighting to survive among

KILL BILL VOL. 1 - REVIEW

Image
Ah Kill Bill, I remember seeing Quentin Tarantino's 4th film at the cinema and having THE best time. This was like watching a compilation of badass revenge movies from the 70's all put together into a fresh, new, exciting, unique package. I hadn't seen anything quite like it and it blew me away. Uma Thurman gives a career-best performance as The Bride, a woman betrayed by her own buddies, namely the "Deadly Viper Assassination Squad" and its leader only known to us as "Bill", and left for dead. But a gunshot to the head just wasn't enough to keep her down and super-Uma is soon back and ready to kick ass. We follow her journey from when she wakes up from a long coma to her confrontation with Lucy Liu's O-Ren Ishii. It's typical revenge movie stuff and it all builds up to a thrilling final fight where the as-yet-unnamed Bride takes on The Crazy 88, easily one of the most useless gangs in movie history. By the end you're so into the Luc

HELL RIDE - REVIEW

Image
Although there never was a fake trailer for this one, Hell Ride is indeed a worthy addition to Tarantino and Rodriguez's Grindhouse . After zombie movies, Mexploitation films ( Machete ) and car chase movies we get this biker flick which comes with QT regulars Michael Madsen and David Carradine but with added Dennis Hopper and Vinnie Jones. *squee* The result? Nothing sensational but it fits very nicely in between Planet Terror and Death Proof in that it contains the overblown silliness of Robert Rodriguez films and the style, dialogs and cool of QT's films. Of course, this being made by Larry Bishop it never achieves the highs of both directors but it makes a fair attempt nonetheless. Somewhat underrated, yes Hell Ride is big, lumbering, confused and dumb but...hello? That's the point. It's a 70's style biker flick! Of course you need lots of ladies in hot pants, gratuitous nudity, unmotivated biking, a trippy magic mushrooms scene and nonsensical dialogs!
