FINDING DORY - REVIEW

Image
Pixar's big 2016 release was Finding Dory , yet another sequel to another one of their most popular movies. This time, it's forgetful Dory's turn to be found (figuratively speaking) somewhere beyond the sea, as she sets out to reconnect with her estranged parents. Initially, a follow-up to Finding Nemo sounded like little more than another Cars -style cash-in but, watching the film, you quickly realise that its core plot actually does have potential. The idea that someone could forget their own parents is a heartbreaking one so Dory's journey does have some emotional weight to it. Dory being kind of a one joke character in the original film, it makes sense for this sequel to show the negative impact her short term memory loss has had on her life rather than constantly make light of it. Against all odds, this movie makes us care about Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) and her journey into the unknown. The action takes us to a Seaworld-style setting where our fish heroes are w

SNOW WHITE: A TALE OF TERROR - REVIEW

Image
With all the half-baked Snow White movies we got last year, you'd think we would have gotten at least one memorable one. Alas, in order to see a decent, recent, Snow White movie, one would need to go back to 1997's Snow White: A Tale Of Terror . That Kristin Kreuk TV movie doesn't count. That was NOT good. With this one, Sigourney Weaver plays Snow White's step mom and, weirdly, for most of the film you find yourself feeling bad for her! What this movie does is give this character a reason to lose it and become the crazed witch we all know and love/crap our pants thinking about. Even if by the end you're not exactly on her side but you still understand her and feel for her. This is really the witch's movie: Snow White is almost a side character here. Actually, early on, Snow White is pretty harsh on her step mom and contributes to turning her into the villain so you're not a big fan of hers for the longest time. Then she grows up and genuinely feels

GHOSTBUSTERS (1984) - REVIEW

Image
If there is a prime example of how good the 80's were at making the most out of the coolest concepts then Ghostbusters is it. What if there were New York firemen but instead of stopping fires they caught... ghosts? It's a neat idea and from the offset you know you're in for a treat. A clever mix of cheesy horror movies, buddy comedy and creative 80's special effects, Ghostbusters not only introduces us to a new concept but it defines it so well, so completely that by the end you totally accept that ghost-busting could (and should) actually be a real thing. The way that concept is made three-dimensional is masterful: you've got the iconic hearse with the instantly recognisable siren, the proton packs with their unique rules (ghost traps, not crossing streams) not to mention Ray Parker Jr's immortal, catchy-as-hell theme song. Whenever those guys are driving around taking out ghosts and that music is playing, you reach a nostalgic nirvana few films manage
