SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS - PRE-PREVIEW

Some films sound so good they shouldn't even exist. Shame it's a comedy, for a second there I thought this was gonna be dead serious. And therefore hilarious. Sadly, being built as a joke it might end up feeling a little too self-aware. Fuck it, I'm seeing it.

IMMORTALS - REVIEW

Comparisons with Zack Snyder's 300 were unavoidable: the themes, the silly costumes, the crazy gold filters, the titan-ic budget... This is not 300. And as awful as Tarsem Singh's upcoming take on Snow White ( Mirror Mirror ) looks, his back catalogue has been pretty creative, especially visually. The Cell being probably the most OTT CSI episode ever, it looked great. There was a surrealism about The Fall and, indeed, The Cell which used special effects in an interesting, arty way and added a certain unique look to otherwise pretty bare stories. For Hollywood, it was a breath of fresh air. Tarsem, like Snyder, is very much a visual director but where Snyder's style feels overblown, bloated and predominantly cliched, Tarsem at least has the decency to throw odd, unlikely imagery at you and although that's not always necessary plot-wise it makes for an enjoyably eyebrow-raising watch. Here’s a film which might as well have been called « Giant Cock and Balls ». The testosterone involved in this Sly-directed pumped-up action best-of is simply overpowering. And yet, I would say, not quite overpowering enough. By this I mean the lack of so many other worthy action stars such as Kurt Russell, Chuck Norris, Steven Seagal, Vin Diesel, JCVD, The Rock (and yes even Hulk Hogan, Wesley Snipes and Jackie Chan would have been welcome!) makes this feel like HALF of the biggest, most badass action film ever, not the actual thing. And yet all this isn’t even the film’s biggest problem. With awful dialogs, dire direction and terrible acting plaguing such a potentially awesome film, The Expendables just fails to impress on almost all accounts. Instead of showing off how cool these guys were, Sly manages to show up how bad, how unspeakably bad their acting really is. Rourke, Roberts and Statham just about get away with it but pretty much everyone else is painful to watch. Lundgren’
