BATMAN VS. TWO-FACE - REVIEW

Image
Before we lost Adam West in 2017, the iconic actor gifted us one last performance as Batman in animated sequel Batman vs. Two-Face . Based on the original 60's TV series, it introduced Harvey Dent/Two-Face who is voiced by William Shatner. The preceding movie, Batman: Return Of The Caped Crusaders , was a fun, silly homage with everything you'd expect from the classic show like lots of classic villains, an over-the-top storyline and a cast including Burt Ward and original Catwoman Julie Newmar. Batman vs. Two-Face also captures the spirit of the show perfectly with lots of funny mistakes left on purpose, silly labels on everything and onomatopoeia-filled fight scenes. The animation is a little less stiff than it was the first time around and there's a lot more emphasis on the story as this new take on Two-Face keeps you guessing throughout. We're introduced to Harvey Dent early on, his friendship with Bruce Wayne prompting some jealousy from Dick Grayson, of cours

SON OF BATMAN - REVIEW

Image
Son Of Batman , as the title suggests, is an animated film which sees Batman discover he has a son. When an army of Man-Bats invades Gotham City, it'll be up to the Dark Knight and Damian, his son-turned-sidekick, to stop Deathstroke's evil plan. We first meet young Damian when Ra's al Ghul's mansion comes under attack after a former student of the League Of Shadows' leader, Slade (aka Deathstroke) turns against his old master. Despite Talia al Ghul's (Damian's mother) best efforts, Ra's fails to make it to the Lazarus Pit in time and he is killed for good. Batman, who was busy taking on Killer Croc, is then told about Damian who soon becomes a liability, treating Alfred like just another servant, fighting enemies single-handedly and clashing with Nightwing. Soon enough, Damian puts on Robin's old costume and joins Batman in stopping the Man-Bat invasion and saving Talia in the process. The film opens strong with a violent, action-packed battl

BAT-FANS - LEGO BATMAN MINI REVIEWS

Image
Young reviewer Kieran Stansbury tackles the Lego Batman games: LEGO BATMAN: THE VIDEOGAME Just as the Lego team was running out of ideas they come with an absolute blinder.  Unlike past Lego games, Batman does not follow a story-based line, instead, it follows its own path for each character from The Joker to Batman in Gotham.  The gameplay is much like the usual Lego game: you're going around smashing things and collecting red bricks, also each level with each character has hidden canisters which, if all collected, unlocks something.  With classic characters like The Joker, Batman, Robin and The Riddler, this is a great game to play, however there is no online multiplayer, only local co-op which does let the game down a bit but overall, as I have mentioned already, it's a great game. LEGO BATMAN 2: DC SUPER HEROES The new city of Gotham awaits the new Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes , and so is Arkham. New family-friendly

BATMAN & ROBIN OST - REVIEW

Image
If you thought the Batman Forever soundtrack was uneven, wait till you get a load of this one... Believe it or not, this OST starts off really well with a Smashing Pumpkins song that, regardless of whether you like the band of not, you gotta admit is pretty darn cool. It's the usual moody, high-pitched angst we expect from the Pumpkins but "The End Is The Beginning Is The End" is definitely worth a listen. It's actually so good there's two versions of it on the album, the slower "The Beginning Is The End Is The Beginning" (what's with the silly titles, you guys?) ending the soundtrack in style. In between you get the usual mix of teen-friendly rock and hip-hop/R&B. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's "Look Into My Eyes" is a catchy effort and strangely, I quite like it. R. Kelly's "Gotham City" is fine, I guess, if you like that sort of syrupy ballad but frankly if you're gonna sing about Gotham City choose someth

BATMAN & ROBIN - REVIEW

Image
It really takes a genius to undo all the work that went into making Batman more than just a hilarious joke. But it takes A GOD to bring an evolved franchise back 30 years in the space of one movie. Now I have nothing against the old campy Adam West TV series but they really were the last word on that type of spoof/comedy take on the character. With Tim Burton's darker, edgier efforts it looked like we were finally getting to know the comic-book hero... That is, until we realised that this was the type of guy who carried around Bat credit cards and had ice-skates built into his shoes in the event that an impromptu ice ballet might break out. Yes, Joel Schumacher, who had done rather well with the admittedly silly but completely entertaining Batman Forever , just couldn't resist the urge to Adam West the franchise to the max. The result was, fair enough, pretty darn funny but at what cost? Joke or not, Batman & Robin is one astonishingly dire effort on every conc

ROBIN HOOD - REVIEW

Image
Some directors are great at one thing in particular. Some are very versatile. Scott thinks he belongs to the latter category when really he's part of the former. Ever since his sci-fi/fantasy days ( Alien , Blade Runner , Legend ) he has avoided those genres like the plague focusing instead on Russell Crowe-led bore-fests like A Good Year or, indeed, Robin Hood. Which is not to say some of his ventures into the unknown haven't been successful: Gladiator , Thelma and Louise and Matchstick Men were all fine but Scott's original style got lost somewhere along the way and his films these days could have been done by pretty much anyone else comfortable with generic fare. Robin Hood is by no means a terrible film it's just unnecessary. Do we care how Robin Hood became Robin Hood? Do we care about his inner turmoils? Do we need to see a boring, gritty, "realistic" Robin Hood prequel? Or do we want to see a good Robin Hood film with Robin happill
