DARK SHADOWS - REVIEW

Image
Tim Burton being the movie wizard of my childhood, people who know me at all will know that I’m somewhat biased when it comes to Burton’s films but that said, I will attempt to objectively review this one fairly and without any emo fanboy nonsense. Then again… Dark Shadows was wicked cool you guys!!! I’m kidding, it was fine. As trendy as it is these days to pan anything Mr Burton does, sadly this review won't. I mean, granted his movies post- Mars Attacks haven’t really reached the heights of his earlier works but a so-so Tim Burton movie tends to still be way more fun than most other films of that type and Dark Shadows is no exception. Actually, there aren’t many movies of that type making this the most original Burton film in years. The mix of overdramatic soap opera and Hammer-style horror is rare but works brilliantly here. Watch as vampires and witches worry about their seafood businesses in an unknown shitty little town. Seafood lol Actually,

CASINO ROYALE - REVIEW

Image
Every Bond renewal comes with a bit of a risk. Every time an actor is introduced to become the new 007 there's always a weird overprotective (irrational) fear that studios would put their foot in it and cast Paul Giamatti or something. Ironically, the result is usually fine and actually makes for a stronger Bond film. Perhaps all this freaking out is for the best and gives everyone the chance to put a little effort into not screwing up the best spy franchise out there. If only this much thought-process had gone into Moonraker ... Essentially, although the Bond franchise feels like a continuous thing, what it comes down to, really, is a collection of quite separate trilogies/series. Casino Royale tries something a little bit different by not only starting from the top with the origins of Bond and showing how he earned his licence to kill, met Felix Leiter, built a bit of an emotional shield between his life and his work... all interesting stuff we kind of take for granted in

BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS - REVIEW

Image
After a decade packed with lame action-hero roles ( Next , Bangkok Dangerous ) and cheesy nonsense ( Knowing , World Trade Centre ), Nicolas Cage returns to the top of his game with one of his all time greatest, craziest performances. Cage is no stranger to playing awkward, random, wackos and with films like Wild At Heart , Vampire's Kiss and Raising Arizona under his belt it seems like pairing up with Werner Herzog is no less than a match made in heaven. Bad Lieutenant sees the titular lieutenant spiral down into a drug-infused folly whilst trying to solve a crime he may or may not even care about. The film could be seen as a Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas -style drug comedy or a dark thriller but truthfully, it's a bit of both. A black comedy cop movie with enough random insanity to satisfy Herzog's followers and pretty much anyone with a dark sense of humour. A strange, unique creation which will no doubt alienate some but which will make others Nic

GHOST RIDER - REVIEW

Image
After watching Ghost Rider for the first time since I saw it at the movies back in 2007, I re-read the review I'd written at the time: in a nutshell "1 star, avoid". What's with the anger? What drove me to banish Ghost Rider to 1 star Hell? I seriously don't know. I mean, I remember hating the first bit where you see a young Johnny Blaze making a deal with the Devil, I remember hating Eva Mendes, I remember hating the direction... Now don't get me wrong, the first bit is pretty bland, Eva Mendes is annoying and the direction feels more suited to a music video than anything else. But then there's the Ghost Rider! Sure the CGI isn't exactly top of the line but the Rider scenes are all pretty gosh darn awesome: riding in town melting parking meters, riding up and down buildings, pulling down helicopters with chains, riding with a fiery Sam Elliott cowboy, melting a jail cell... pretty kick ass. It's just a shame Nic Cage feels misca
