PARANORMAL ACTIVITY - REVIEW

Image
As rubbish as  The Blair Witch Project  was on the whole, at least it opened up new avenues and possibilities for the horror genre. The Blair Witch's ending at least proving, albeit very briefly, that the "handheld" style could indeed bring fresh scares. It took 10 years but finally a film lives up to that premise. Paranormal Activity's clever use of repetition and convincing performances finally captures the inexplicable eerieness of a big empty house in the middle of the night making this the best haunted house movie in a long time. The story may be unlikely but it works and doesn't detract from the film's atmosphere at all. Is it scary? Yes. But not in an obvious, in your face, loud musical sting kind of way. Turn the lights off, pay attention, get into it and you won't sleep a wink.

ASHURA - REVIEW

Image
More along the lines of Casshern than the recent anime-style extreme gore subgenre which is sweeping Japanese cinema by storm, Ashura is actually not so much about the gratuitous violence and gore but rather about its opera-style story and general melodramatic feel. Adapted from a play, Ashura is very theatrical throughout and often feels like a cross between an opera, anime, a samurai film, an Onimusha video game and a cheesy Hammer horror film. There's dodgy CGI and way too many green-screened backgrounds but overall the film still looks pretty decent. It's the performances though which keep the whole thing afloat: some are hammy, some are very good: it's a mixed bag but overall the cast keep Ashura entertaining throughout. That said, the film still feels much longer than it is and could have done with a shorter running time and a faster pace. It remains compelling throughout though and it's worth a look if you're interested in Kabuki or any of t

666 THE DEMON CHILD - REVIEW

Image
As far as bad movies go, it's hard to do better than this little nugget. Unless you're Tommy Wiseau. Then again, compared to other equally terrible creations, 666 The Demon Child is actually very entertaining: plastic devil babies, giant eggs, old men with tattoos, archaeologists, still images of the sky, the same annoying sound of like 10 babies all whining in unison repeated A THOUSAND times!!! What's not to like? From the soporific opening in which an old Native American man walks for about 10 minutes before uttering the immortal line: "And now, it begins!" to the genuinely perplexing end "twist" (think the end of Godzilla except you can't actually tell what you're even looking at), The Demon Child is one of those cinematic catastrophes which has to be seen to be believed. Needless to say the acting is beyond terrible, the script and direction are abysmal, the lighting minimalist to say the least (one light?), the sound dis

SEASON OF THE WITCH - REVIEW

Image
Oddball genius Nic Cage returns with yet another supernatural effort and although we're not getting the delightfully madcap Cage of Bad Lieutenant or Vampire's Kiss , this is restrained but silly NC. Always entertaining. He stars alongside Ron Perlman in this adventure which sees both knights/crusaders escort a witch to some castle. From the offset we get bad hair, silly helmets, dumb one-liners, American accents and epic slo-mo: all the ingredients of a true epic fail. And yet, from the genuinely very good opening sequence, this is a really fun ride from start to finish.  In what other film can you see Ron Perlman headbutting a demon repeatedly in the face? Well, perhaps Hellboy... But still, it's awesome! The whole thing feels very Hammer from the start and this feeling is confirmed when Christopher Lee himself shows up for a creepy but effective cameo. Everyone seems to be having a ball and although the ending relies way too much on CGI, it's well wor
