THE COMEDIANS - REVIEW

Image
In 2015, Billy Crystal and Josh Gad co-starred in The Comedians , a mockumentary series following the collaboration of two mismatched actors in a TV sketch comedy show and their love/hate relationship off-camera. Like a cross between Curb Your Enthusiasm , The Larry Sanders Show and Extras , The Comedians is instantly derivative in that it's your typical improv-heavy behind-the-scenes type of show where you see the two leads clash and deal with various awkward situations then talk to the camera about it. This is intercut with silly sketches from the show being portrayed in the series. Crystal and Gad may not be the obvious choice for a team, which might explain the low ratings, yet they quickly prove that they are a worthy comedy duo and the show is surprisingly effective. It's refreshing to see Billy Crystal enjoying himself playing a purposely more flawed character and Gad adds another level to his usual schtick by showing a lot of improvisational talent, great timing a

MONSTERS INC. - REVIEW

Image
In the early days of Pixar's world domination, this little film about a universe where monsters harness the fear of human children which they frighten at night (through their closets) to use as energy came out and although on paper it sounds like the most terrifying thing you'll ever see, the movie was quite the opposite. Aimed at younger viewers, Monsters Inc. is closer to, say, the likes of A Bug's Life or Cars in terms of its target audience but better than both. Thankfully, it's just about charming enough to keep older viewers' interest there throughout. We follow two monsters, one voiced by John Goodman, the other by Billy Crystal, who mistakenly end up with a kid human transcending the human world into their own. This causes all sorts of shenanigans, as you can imagine, since children are seen as the monsters in this world, and it all builds up to a confrontation with Steve Buscemi's chameleon-style monster (the last part of that phrase sounds a bi

DECONSTRUCTING HARRY - REVIEW

Image
In what is arguably Woody Allen's last masterpiece, Deconstructing Harry sees Allen play a deeply flawed character who is terrible at life and can only function through his work. Only the versions of himself that he himself creates when writing his short stories and novels are quirky and lovable, the real Harry Block (who incidentally suffers from writer's block, geddit?) is something else entirely. How many Woody Allen movies do you know where the guy not only swears constantly but plays a character who openly claims to love whores (his words)? Pretty great already lol Yes we get to know Harry and deconstruct his character through both his far-out stories and several glimpses into his everyday life. We get to see the people around him both as what they are and as how he sees them, same goes for himself. Harry isn't the nicest of guys and is actually a pretty dislikable person altogether but by the end of the film you'll still like him, or you'll understan
