MY TOP 10 ALAN RICKMAN FILM PERFORMANCES

Another day, another great loss as actor Alan Rickman passes away unexpectedly leaving a big gap at the heart of cinema. And so I give you my Top 10 Alan Rickman Film Performances with the promise to myself to make sure I watch all those Rickman films I may have missed as I'm sure I'm missing out on some great performances because, after all, that's what the man always delivered.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND


While not everyone loved Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland, we can all agree that casting Alan Rickman as The Caterpillar was spot-on: that unique voice of his fitting the character perfectly. So there's one reason to actually give that movie a chance!

GAMBIT



Easily the best thing about this old-fashioned farce was Alan Rickman who effortlessly stole every single scene he was in playing Colin Firth's nudist, art collecting boss. Whether acting rude or imitating Cameron Diaz's Southern twang, Rickman's having a great time in Gambit and that makes him one entertaining, likeable antagonist.

SNOW CAKE



An unexpected role for Alan Rickman to take on was as a neurotic British tourist in this indie drama. Taking a break from bigger franchises, the actor acted alongside Sigourney Weaver in this off-beat romance thereby proving he could also shine in smaller productions.

THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY



This underrated film adaptation of Douglas Adams' classic sci-fi novel had a lot going for it and was altogether a lot of fun. One of the best updates from the older TV version was Alan Rickman's take on Marvin the depressed robot. Another scene-stealer.

SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET



One couldn't have hoped for a better actor to take on the role of Judge Turpin in Tim Burton's film version of Stephen Sondheim's immortal musical. Though the creepiest Turpin moment didn't make it into the movie, Alan Rickman still had plenty of scenes to not only make his baddie as despicable as possible but also sing!

ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES 



Watching Alan Rickman's performance in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves is, quite simply, a treat. Not only is he purposely as over-the-top as possible as the Sheriff Of Nottingham but he is genuinely hilarious. He single-handedly makes what could have just been another run-of-the-mill blockbuster a lot of fun: every scene he's in is a joy. So good.

THE HARRY POTTER FILMS


While not passionate one way or the other about the Harry Potter films themselves, I can say that every time I would watch one those movies, my favourite element was always Alan Rickman as Severus Snape. He was intimidating, he made every scene he was in count and even when he was on the side of the good guys he felt like a genuine threat. Just a dedicated actor enjoying being part of something he loved.

GALAXY QUEST


As the professional actor who plays the Dr Spock role on a Star Trek-style TV show, Alan Rickman was just perfect: grumpy throughout, jealous of his co-star, depressed about how his once respectable career had been reduced to one silly line, only he could have given the line "By Grabthar's Hammer, the suns of Warvan, you shall be avenged." weight. What can I say except go and watch Galaxy Quest right now, you'll thank me later.

DOGMA


Alan Rickman played Metatron (the Voice of God) in Dogma and nailed a role which, in lesser hands, could have just been mildly amusing at best. He's not only very funny all the way through but he brings his own brand of British cynicism to the table, something which works brilliantly in contrast to the other characters in Kevin Smith's film. Surprise casting but what a great surprise!

DIE HARD


It was always going to be Die Hard. For many of us, this is the first time we really noticed Alan Rickman as an actor and although the villain he plays in this movie doesn't have the most genius plan, he is so charismatic and entertaining as Hans Gruber that he remains one of the most memorable movie baddies to date. Whether he cruelly disposes of someone that stands in his way, angrily yells at one of his rubbish minions, monologues to a terrified audience or pretends to fool John McClane with the worst American accent known to man, Gruber was Rickman at his very best.

Thank you for all your great work, Mr Rickman. We will miss it.

24: SEASON 1 - REVIEW

I know, I'm like 100 years late. But I'm The "Retro" Critic! :P I remember catching a glimpse of this iconic show back in the day and actually finding it pretty entertaining. Sadly, I hadn't followed the thread from the very beginning so it felt like catching the season about halfway through would be a bit of a waste. I decided to wait until I could check it out on DVD. 10 years later... Well I finally made it, that's the main thing, right? So was it worth the wait? What do I make of this very first season? It's good. I thought it would be quite good and it was. Basically I'm rarely taken by a cop-themed series unless you've got a mad scientist in there ( Fringe ), evil twins ( Alias ) or... Columbo ( Columbo ). But 24 did a hell of a good job keeping me entertained throughout and making me care about MOST of what was going on. THE ADDAMS FAMILY MUSICAL - REVIEW

 Looks like every Broadway comedy musical these days is trying to be The Producers ... Mel Brooks' hugely successful show now being the basic template for shows based on movies (with the exception of the admittedly *ahem* unique Spiderman musical), after Dirty Rotten Scoundrels we're treated to Broadway's The Addams Family. An odd release but probably an inevitable one. Not based on any of the movies, the story actually follows up from past adaptations and sees a now grown-up Wednesday falling in love with a "normal" dude and having to face her unconventional family. It's essentially Addams Family Values with Wednesday taking on the Fester role. A good idea which should please both fans of the films and those looking to see something new. But what works for The Producers just doesn't work for everything. Nathan Lane as Gomez Addams? So much for the tall, suave, maniacal Gomez we all know and love!
